Lions for the Fine Arts Institute
Are of bronze and the largest ever modeled in a standing posture.
The two bronze lions erected on the pedestals in the front of the Fine Arts Institute Monday and Tuesday are swathed in canvas and the public will not be allowed to see them until May 10 when the annual exhibits of the Artists' Sketch club opens.
These lions are the gift of Mrs. Henry Field, who promised them before her husband's death, and who, since his death, has bestowed upon the institute his $300,000 collection of modern French paintings. The artist is Edward Kemeys who modeled the wild animals on the pedestals of the Exposition. They were cast by the American Bronze company at Grand Junction. They weigh three tones each, are ten feet high and fifteen feet long, and are the largest lions ever modeled in a standing posture.
"These lions," said Mr. Kemeys yesterday, "are conceived as guarding the building. The one at the south side of the main entrance is represented as having his attention attracted by something in the distance which he is closely watching. The other one is represented as have discovered something which displeases him, and he has his back up and is ready for a roar and a spring. They cost $18,000. They were unveiled awhile yesterday that Mrs. Page might get her first look at them, and she was delighted with them." ~Chicago Tribune May 3, 1894 pg12
All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
